5 Paleo Diet Tips

Even when it seems that the information is overwhelming for what's healthy and what's not, it is possible to choose a healthy lifestyle that includes modern and manageable choices to accommodate any lifestyle. The Paleo Diet will allow you to eat healthy, enjoy your meals, and assist you in achieving real health and wellness!
The Paleo Diet does not include grains, dairy, sugars, or processed foods - none of which provide nutritional value and support disease-causing inflammation in the body. The Paleo Diet supports eating a healthy mix of organic safe meat, fresh vegetables, some fruit, some nuts and seeds... and of course, healthy fats and oils! "Food is our fuel" that makes the body run - what you put into your bod will become the building blocks for every cell, muscle, tissue, and organ. The old adage "you are what you eat" was surprisingly true.
Here are 5 easy tips to help you get started on your Paleo journey to a healthy lifestyle:
1) Pre-cook your food, even bring lunch to work. In order to minimize cooking time, cook large batches of food at the beginning of the week or several days in advance!
2) Keep a paleo-friendly meal replacement bar or shake in your desk or purse in case of a change of plans. Being un-prepared will lead to poor decision making.
3) Try a new vegetable - the more color, and the deeper the color, the more nutritious it is! For example, kale is one of my favorite superfoods and it's very versatile - you can use it in recipes for smoothies, salads, and even cooking as a warm dinner side.
4) Don't keep any food you don't "want" to eat in the house... at all. Out of sight, out of mind. And no, your kids don't need those chips and cookies either.
5) Learn how to use new spices. This will offer much more variety and flavors in your meals.
And speaking of planning, here's a little inspiration for planning your healthy paleo-friendly snacks!
- Apple with almond butter
- Cinnamon Nuts (nuts dusted with cinnamon and baked at 250 degrees about 10-15 minutes)
- Hard boiled eggs
- "Guacamole" salad (equal amounts of cubed avocado and tomato, sprinkle with chopped red onion and cilantro)
- Fresh vegetable juice / smoothie
- Kale chips (coat kale in olive oil and cook at 250 degrees for approx. 20 mins.or until crisp)

Crossfit and the Paleo Diet: A Natural Fitness Solution

Many Americans struggle with obesity with billions of dollars spent every year on weight loss aids and fad diets. However, losing weight and staying in great shape could be quite easy if we just go back to our roots. The Paleo Diet and Crossfit training program provides an excellent synergy in terms of a natural strategy to achieve your fitness goals.
The Paleo Diet is based around the philosophy of rejecting the modern diet and trying to get back to the way our distant ancestors ate. The diet not only does away with processed food, it also eliminates much of the produce from the modern agricultural revolution, including whole grains. Basically it reverses the clock to a time when cavemen roamed Europe in a hunter and gatherer mode before the time of agriculture.
As a result, the Paleo Diet mostly consists of a diet of meats and organic fruits and vegetables. The diet works mainly by cutting out much of the processed nutritionally deficient food that caused problems with our nutrition in the first place. Additionally whole foods combat insulin resistance that has become a big problem in the West. One advantage of the Paleo Diet is that more calories can be consumed since there is a greater thermogenic effect to the food since it is in its raw unprocessed state requiring more energy to digest. Thus calorie counting is not a problem.
One of the more highly controversial aspects of the Paleo Diet is that foods such as whole grains, milk, and egg products are excluded from the diet. There is little scientific evidence to support excluding these foods, and many claims about our system not having time to adapt to these changes over the years by Paleo enthusiasts have been debunked by scientific studies showing that there have been genetic changes over time, such as the expression of more copies of the salivary amylase gene. Nonetheless, the Paleo Diet probably does work better for some people with food allergies, such as those who are lactose intolerant or gluten intolerant.
The Crossfit training program likewise is based on the concept of doing things the way we are meant to. As a result it stresses functional movements mirroring day to day actions, over artificial workouts that do not correspond to anything we might do naturally during the day. In fact, given this natural philosophy it is not surprising that the Paleo Diet is one of the two diets recommended by the program (the other being the Zone Diet).
Workouts for the day are constantly varied and posted online each day. People are also challenged to set and achieve robust personal goals. Activities are done for short durations at high intensity. Much research has shown such high intensity interval training such as this can actually be more effective for fat loss because it is important to give muscle tissue an opportunity to periodically rest. Otherwise, by doing too much steady cardiovascular endurance training, one could be in danger of losing lean body mass during a diet. Our ancestors did not do cardiovascular endurance workouts, they expended a short amount of energy in short periods of time.
The great thing about the Crossfit program and Paleo Diet together is that since the Paleo Diet is not about calorie restriction and tends to generate high protein levels from meat consumption, lean muscle mass development can be accelerated. Maintaining and building lean muscle mass has long been recognized as key to boosting the metabolism and maintaining long term weight loss. By combining these two programs together, you just might reach your weight loss goals easier than you would have thought possible.

Paleo Diet Tips: Kicking The Sugar Addiction

If you are like many claiming to have a sweet tooth, you may be unwittingly suffering from a silent addiction to sugar. These days, many of the food products sold on the market are laden with sugar, which is added in different forms and goes under a variety of names. Suffice it to say, sugar is around us and avoiding it can be very tricky.

Paleo diet is one of the many diets that call for the elimination of refined sugar, along with other restrictions. This is something that has proven to be difficult if not impossible for many. Sugar is sold under different forms such as high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, glucose and refined sugar.

To help you transition to Paleo diet and ditch your sugar addiction for good, here are some helpful tips:

Drink Water

A can of ice cold soda would seem like the perfect thirst quencher on a hot day. But given the amount of sugar in sodas and other canned beverages, you should definitely think twice before reaching out for a sip.

Whenever you feel the need to indulge in any processed sugary drink, opt for a glass of water instead. According to a number of studies conducted, majority of Americans are found to be chronically dehydrated. Whenever you feel some craving for sugar, it may be your body's way of telling you to that you need to rehydrate it. More often than not, drinking water will curb that seemingly incessant urge.

Go For Natural

You don't have to write off anything sweet when you are on a Paleo diet. Instead of indulging yourself to a slice of cake, choose natural and organic. Satisfy your sweet tooth with naturally sweet fruits and vegetables such as carrots, mangoes and berries - which do not only offer healthier alternatives, they also come with significantly lower calories.

Stay Active

Lounging on the couch or staying long hours in front of the computer can trigger some serious sugar craving. Always try to stay active by working out or doing some household chores to keep you busy and distracted.

Excessive and chronic consumption of refined and processed sugars should be avoided whether you are on a Paleo diet or not. Sugar has been one of the major culprits linked to a number of diseases today such as obesity and even cancer.

Claiming you have a sweet tooth is a lame excuse to use when succumbing to your sugar cravings. Hopefully, these tips can help you take better control of your diet and health.

Five Superfoods You Must Add To Your Paleo Diet Grocery List

One of the immense advantages of a great paleo diet grocery list is the fact that all of the foods on it are paleo approved and healthy by definition. As you may be aware already the paleo diet is modeled after what humans used to eat during the Paleolithic era. During that time period there were no processed foods, everything was as natural as it could get and humans would not experience any of the chronic nutrition triggered ailments that are so common nowadays. This is proven by studies that were carried out in cooperation between archeologists, modern day nutritionists and health professionals.
Before I first went on the paleo diet myself I was skeptical and doubted that it would have the effects that it does. But one year into it I have come such a long way that I decided to start my own blog on the diet and spread the good news so that many more people may enjoy the long term health benefits of being on this diet. In this article I am going to introduce five foods that are essential to a balanced paleo diet to you.
The first one is salmon. Salmon is often mentioned as one of the healthiest foods on the planet. You must however make a distinction between organically farmed salmon and the mass produced salmon that is widely available today. The latter often times contains harmful substances, while organic salmon is truly one of the most healthy foods. Organic salmon is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to your cardiovascular health. This type of fish also contains high quality protein and a high amino acid content that is very important for cell renewal and muscle growth. While some people believe that salmon is a fat food, the truth is that salmon actually helps burn fat.
The second super food I will introduce to you is coconut oil. Coconut oil should be on everybody's paleo diet grocery list. It is literally one of the most powerful health foods contributing to hair care, skin care, a healthy level of cholesterol, weight loss, proper digestion as well as a boosted immune system. Many people are unaware that coconut oil is a lot healthier to cook with than ordinary vegetable oils that are available in supermarkets. Not only does it not do harm, it actually contributes to your health in a considerable way. This is a must have!
The third food on my paleo diet grocery list that I will introduce to you is blueberries. Blueberries may not be as popular as strawberries. As a matter of fact many people have never tried blueberries in their life because they are lesser known and usually less available than other well known berries. But what all of these people miss is that blueberries have one of the highest antioxidant capacities among all fruits! Yes you read that right. Blueberries boost your immune system by trapping free radicals within your body that would otherwise contribute to damaging cellular structure as well as DNA. They are one of the most powerful anti aging foods available.
The fourth paleo diet superfood that is an absolute must have is the artichoke and particularly the artichoke heart. The benefits of this vegetable include a rich amount of antioxidants just like can be found in the above mentioned paleo blueberries. Additionally artichoke hearts contain high amounts of fiber such as inulin which supports your intestinal health by increasing the growth of beneficial bacteria. Artichoke hearts are healthy for everybody, but if you do suffer from gallbladder issues please avoid artichoke leaves and only eat the artichoke hearts.
The fifth and last must have food for your paleo diet grocery list is parsley. Parsley is often referred to as the anti-cancer herb. It is very rich in antioxidants like beta-carotine, quercetin and vitamin C and also contains highly beneficial flavonoids. Parsley reduces risk of pancreatic cancer, leukemia, cervical as well as ovarian cancer. The apigenin inside of parsley is also known to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, exhibiting strong anti tumor characteristics. This superfood is also a very rich source of minerals including magnesium, fluoride (dental health), boron as well as calcium. All of these support a healthy bone and skeletal structure and prevent ailments such as osteoporosis and arthritis.

Effectively Lose Weight With A Paleo Diet Grocery List

In today's sugar and carbohydrate addicted world a lot of people experience excessive weight. Sugar and carbohydrates are in fact the number one cause of excess weight. These types of nutrients trigger a whole variety of issues for humans, beginning with insulin spikes that cause low energy levels all the way to chronic ailments that can devastate a healthy living. The paleo diet is one of the only diets available today that almost totally cuts sugar and processed carbohydrates from nutrition and thereby eliminates a host of problems that would otherwise persist or even increase.
One of the first things anybody will notice when looking at their paleo diet grocery list is that it contains zero processed or refined foods, meaning all of the foods on there are either organically grown vegetables or fruit or meat that comes directly from the farmer, butcher or the seas. An optimized paleo diet grocery list ideally only contains vegetables and fruit with low carbohydrate and very low starch content or a healthy type of natural sugar that does not do harm to your body.
The next great advantage of the paleo diet is that it can contain as much or as little protein as you like to have, and that due to the nutrients you take in on a daily basis, your protein synthesis will become optimized over time. One of the first things that is going to be recommended to you whenever you join a gym to lose weight is to amplify your protein intake. What ordinary gym instructors do not tell you is that in order to maximize protein synthesis you should almost completely cut sugar from your diet. The only time any sugar should be required is right after a good muscle workout or during long endurance cardiovascular related exercises. The logical thing to do is to replace your usual sugary soft or energy drinks with fresh fruit from your paleo diet grocery list.
A fruit smoothie or a vegetable and fruit smoothie mix right after training or even during training can quickly be absorbed and is totally natural. In addition to the healthy sugar you will get from this type of drink it also contains plenty of minerals and vitamins that are much more easily absorbed by your body than are synthetic, factory produced supplements. It is therefore quite difficult to understand why only a small percentage of people even today choose synthetic supplements over natural ones. The main explanation I could find for that phenomenon is that natural foods are more widely available and do not receive the same kind of marketing back up that other nutritional supplements within the fitness industry find. Natural foods already sell well and do not necessarily have to be advertised, even though they should be!
Getting back to the topic of protein, you will find that your paleo diet grocery list is a food list filled with protein. The first thing any bodybuilder or athlete that wants to focus on building muscle and losing weight needs in his diet is protein. The reason is simple; protein is what builds muscle cells and therefore protein is what builds the non-fat components in your body after your workouts. This means the more muscle you build by feeding protein to your body, the less place there will be for fat and your body composition will eventually change to being predominantly muscle. Protein in fact burns fat and the higher the muscle or protein content of your body, the lower is your body fat percentage.
This means that if you use your paleo diet food list for a long enough duration you will experience a decrease in body fat percentage, an increase in vitamin and mineral absorption as well as muscle growth. Furthermore it needs to be mentioned that consistent use of a paleo diet food list will mean that your body's hormone levels will return to normal. This can mean a variety of things starting with automated fat loss, healthy appetite without cravings, healthy and regular sleep at night, steady energy levels without insulin spikes and an overall increase in wellbeing combined with a drastic reduction of physical ailments.

Paleo Diet Basics - What You Need to Know!

Everyone is looking for the best diet for them and a diet that will help them attain and maintain a healthy body weight. One diet that has been gaining a lot of attention in the last few years is the Paleo Diet. Simply put it is eating as our prehistoric ancestors would have done. In this article I will go over the Paleo Diet basics are, what the benefits you can expect from it, and why it might be right for your life!

After the '80s and the craze of fad diets (can you say grapefruit anyone?) several better diet options emerged that were slightly more well rounded, such as the low-carb diets, but these still weren't quite in line with what we really should be eating. Seriously, does anyone think that eating bacon every day, no matter how delicious, is the ticket to losing weight and living a healthy life?

The Paleo Diet takes some from the low carb camp and the raw food craze and tempers them with a more realistic view of what our bodies have evolved to eat and digest (and I'm not talking about hot dogs.) The Paleo Diet basics are that we should be eating:
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Lean Meat
  • Seafood
  • Nuts and Seeds
  • Healthy Fats
Essentially this means eating the things we find in nature and that if you were living off the land would find to eat today. The basic idea is that our bodies evolved eating these foods and that they are the ideal mix of proteins and starches that we should be eating now.

How Is This Different From Low Carb?

The general low-carb diets eschew eating any carbohydrates while the Paleo Diet basics include things like fresh fruits and vegetables. The Paleo Diet also doesn't include any dairy which is a big dietary problem for many people these days. Too many years of hormone laced milk has made even people who should tolerate dairy well, sensitive or even allergic to it.

The Paleo Diet really focuses on smaller portions of higher quality nutrients. One such difference is that it emphazises 100% grass fed meats instead of mass produced grain fed beef and hot-house chickens.

Some Benefits of This Diet Plan

A lot of people first look at the Paleo Diet as a way to lose weight. The absence of processed foods, grains, and sugars along with a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables and high quality lean meats means that shedding unwanted body fat is easier. Many people find that adhering to the Paleo Diet makes it easier to resist cheating as the foods they are eating tend make them feel more full for a longer period of time.

Beyond the weight loss benefits, there are claims of improved cardiovascular health, decreased risk of diabetes, reduced allergies, sustained energy and blood sugar levels, clearer skin, an improved ability to sleep, and a general improvement in people's moods.

Should You Go On the Paleo Diet?

If you have been fighting to lose weight, and just aren't happy with the results that you are getting with traditional weight loss methods then you should definitely give the Paleo Diet a look. There are many great resources for recipes and that is really a big help in keeping you from getting in a rut with your cooking. Getting burned out on what you are eating is one of the big reasons people quit their diets and go back to eating junk food!
